Professor Nebil Husayn has been selected for the Distinguished Scholar Fellowship at the Shi‘a Research Institute for the 2025-2026 academic year.
He will be a visiting fellow of the SRI where he will meet with faculty and students, as well as deliver guest lectures at the University of Toronto.
We look forward to welcoming him during his visits during both the fall and winter semesters.
Dr. Nebil Husayn is an Associate Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Miami. His research broadly considers the development of Islamic theology, historiography and debates on the caliphate. Husayn obtained his Ph.D. in Near Eastern Studies from Princeton University and an M.A. in Arabic and Islamic Studies from Harvard University. Husayn is the recipient of a Fulbright award and the University of Miami Fellowship in the Arts and Humanities. He is the author of Opposing the Imam (2021) and Caliphate and Imamate (2023).
November 2025 – Dr. Nebil Husayn addressed an SRI event entitled ‘Between Reason and Revelation: Debates on Morality in Islamic Thought’. His thought-provoking presentation sparked a lively dialogue and conversation with, and between, audience members.
November 2025 – Distinguished Visiting Fellow Dr. Nebil Husayn addressed the students in the class ‘Devotional Prayer in the Islamic Tradition’ (SMT3367H). He presented a textual analysis of Ziyarat al Ghadir, and had an insightful and interactive conversation with students.
