Thijl Sunier is professor emeritus of anthropology of religion at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, chair ‘Islam in European Societies’. He has conducted research on Islamic authority, religious critique, religious organisations, Islamic leadership, and knowledge production in Europe, and on Islam and digitisation. From 2013 until 2018 he conducted a research project on Islamic authority ‘Making Islam Work in the Netherlands’, and a project on critique of religion. From 2018 until 2023 he was involved in a European (EU funded) research project ‘Mediating Islam in the Digital Age’ (MIDA). Apart from his academic work, he has conducted several commissioned policy research projects, and he wrote books and brochures on Islam for a broad audience.
